Official Descriptions[]

Netflix[]

"While visiting Ken and exploring a coral reef, Barbie and her sisters make an amazing discovery and meet a mysterious new friend."

DVD[]

"Join Barbie™ and her sisters Skipper™, Stacie™, and Chelsea™ as they go on an adventure to a tropical island where Ken™ is doing a marine biology internship. While snorkelling, they discover a young dolphin trapped in an enclosure—but this isn't just any dolphin; it's a beautiful bright green Gemstone Dolphin! Barbie then meets a mysterious friend named Isla, who turns out to be a magical mermaid! Soon after, the girls discover that the dolphin is being held by Marlo, the biologist Ken is interning with. Her intentions are to make money by exhibiting the dolphin for its unique traits. They must work together to free the dolphin so he can be reunited with his Gemstone Dolphin family before Marlo sends him away."

Story[]

The Gemstone Dolphins see a boat while swimming with their mermaid friend, Isla. The youngest dolphin, Emerald, gets captured by fishermen. As the dolphins get separated, their distinctive markings disappear. Isla goes to rescue Emerald, who is put in captivity at a marine research facility on an island. Ken is doing a marine biology internship at the facility, so Barbie and her sisters visit him. The girls bring their puppies with them. Barbie, Skipper, Ken and the puppies use a speedboat to go to the reef. The puppies wait on the boat while Barbie and the others go free diving. While using her camera to take underwater photos, Skipper takes a blurry photo of Isla. Skipper suggests to Barbie and Ken that they follow Isla.

At the resort, Stacie and Chelsea use binoculars and see Emerald at the facility. They go there to get a closer look and arrive at the same time as Barbie, Skipper, Ken and the puppies. Ken explains that the island locals talk about the myth of the Gemstone Dolphins, and Emerald is in the pool for sick or injured animals. Barbie thinks Emerald looks fine and that he got in by accident, so she tries to free him. The research facility owner, Marlo, stops her. Ken asks Marlo if Emerald is a Gemstone Dolphin, but she lies that they don't exist. Marlo says a vet is flying in from the mainland tomorrow afternoon to check Emerald. Marlo tells everyone to leave, but the puppies are left behind. Barbie returns for the puppies and meets Isla, who has used a magic necklace to turn her mermaid tail into human legs.

Isla tells Barbie that Emerald is a Gemstone Dolphin and there are others. She wants Barbie's help freeing Emerald, so they make a deal that they will wait for the vet to check Emerald if Barbie doesn't tell anyone about the other Gemstone Dolphins. Barbie invites Isla back to the resort to meet her sisters. Skipper is intrigued by the blurry photo she took of Isla as a mermaid. Barbie suggests that it may be a Gemstone Dolphin, so Isla reminds Barbie that she agreed not to mention them. Isla doesn't want Barbie to tell anyone else because she doesn't trust humans. Meanwhile, Marlo asks a man named Hugo to come to the facility tomorrow morning. She plans on making a profit from Emerald. In the evening, Isla meets Ken while visiting the resort's sandwich bar with Barbie and her sisters. Skipper takes a group selfie, and Barbie and her sisters improvize a song about their treasured sisterhood.

Barbie invites Isla to sleepover and they go swimming together the following morning. The Gemstone Dolphins find Isla and one of them touches her necklace, turning her back into a mermaid. Isla asks Barbie not to tell anyone and teaches Barbie how to swim like a mermaid. At the resort, Stacie sees Hugo arriving in his helicopter and assumes he is the vet. Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea try to find Barbie to tell her the vet has arrived. The puppies go with them. While looking at Hugo's helicopter, Chelsea notices a walrus logo. The girls overhear Marlo telling Hugo that she wants to transport Emerald to the mainland facility in an hour, and she will make a fortune off of Emerald. Barbie's sisters realize that Hugo is not a vet, and Skipper takes a photo of his logo.

Meanwhile, Isla and the dolphins find an underwater cave and Isla tries to explore it. The cave contains a confusing maze of tunnels, so she keeps getting lost. After Isla returns to Barbie, they realize the Gemstone Dolphins are gone. Isla correctly assumes they have gone to the research facility. Marlo gives Ken a code to unlock the gate to Emerald's enclosure, so the dolphins swim over to Emerald and their distinctive markings reappear. Marlo orders Ken to lock them in, and Barbie's sisters overhear Margo telling Hugo that she will need more nets. Skipper puts a filter on the blurry photo of Isla and sees that her photo is of a mermaid. However, Isla's face is not visible. After Barbie and Isla arrive at the research facility, Barbie asks Ken to unlock the gate but Marlo has already changed the code. Isla is upset that she trusted Barbie and no longer wants her help.

Barbie is found by her sisters. Skipper explains that she looked up Hugo's logo on the internet and found out that he is a criminal who runs a sideshow company. Ken tries the code again and gets locked out of the system. A new code is sent to the master device, which is a remote that Marlo carries around. Barbie comes up with a plan that involves everyone, including Isla, so Barbie finds Isla and apologizes. Isla agrees to help, and everyone goes to the sandwich bar, where Marlo is having lunch. After Ken, Chelsea and her puppy Honey distract Marlo, Chelsea takes the remote and gives it to Skipper. Skipper syncs it to her tablet and gets the new code. Isla distracts Marlo further by splashing her tail in the water. Stacie uses her binoculars to watch over everything and sees Isla as a mermaid.

After Barbie's sisters gets the code and return the remote to Marlo, she realizes she has been hacked. At the research facility, Stacie asks Isla how she looked like a mermaid. Isla gets in the pool and uses her necklace to turn back into a mermaid. Skipper tries the code, but it fails because Marlo reprogrammed her device. Isla and the dolphins hide in the underwater tunnel when Marlo returns. Marlo says she will be transporting the dolphins by helicopter, so Barbie claims that the dolphins have escaped. Marlo leaves, hoping to spot the dolphins from the air. Isla and the dolphins resurface, and Isla says the tunnel may be connected to the cave she found earlier. Barbie suggests using a signal from the cave, so Isla takes a shell off her necklace and gives it to Barbie. If they both hold a shell from the necklace, it will create a current of light and color that will lead Isla and the dolphins to Barbie.

Barbie and Stacie go to the cave and Barbie touches the shell, causing her and Isla's shells to light up. From the helicopter, Marlo sees the dolphins escaping. Isla and the dolphins meet up with Barbie and Stacie. Ken uses the speedboat to reach Barbie, Stacie and Isla. Isla says if they get to a fast-moving current, then Isla and the dolphins can get far away quickly. Isla tells Barbie to keep the shell and then dives into the ocean. After seeing that Isla is a mermaid, Marlo decides to capture her instead of the dolphins. Barbie quickly disguises herself as a mermaid, so Marlo captures her by accident. Barbie says Marlo will have to find a new career and her research facility will be taken away. Barbie's sisters say goodbye to Isla, who says she will never forget them and then swims away with the dolphins.

Later, Skipper wins a photo competition after submitting all her photos except the one of Isla as a mermaid. Skipper deletes that photo and says to Barbie that it is not their secret to tell. Skipper thinks the best photo is the group selfie. Barbie looks at it and wonders how Isla is doing. Barbie has been attempting to find Isla using the shell. Skipper suggests that Barbie try again. Barbie remains hopeful and holds the shell underwater. The water lights up and Isla finally reunites with everyone. Isla says she was able to get closer every time Barbie tried, and she thanks Barbie for not giving up on her. Barbie responds that she would never give up on her "sister of the sea," and everyone is excited to see Isla and the Gemstone Dolphins again.

Trivia[]

  • When one of the puppies chases after the crab, the Nutcracker is in the crab's hiding place. The Nutcracker makes cameos in many Barbie movies as an easter egg.
  • There is a goof when Barbie and her sisters sing "Treasure": Skipper's top changes from her white T-shirt to her black tank top.
  • This is the last Barbie movie to have the quote, "This is our story, what's yours?" at the end.
  • This is the last Barbie movie to use a Canadian voice acting cast, so it is the last movie to have Erika Lindbeck as the voice of Barbie. In Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, America Young began voicing Barbie.
  • The longest gap between Barbie movies is the almost 3 year gap between this movie and Barbie: Princess Adventure. The shortest gap is between Barbie: Mermaid Power and Barbie: Epic Road Trip, which was less than 2 months.
  • This is the only Barbie movie to be produced by Rainmaker Studios by that name and the last released under Mattel Creations.
