Mariposa is the main protagonist in the Mariposa sequels. She is voiced by Chiara Zanni in the first film and she is voiced by Kelly Sheridan in the sequel. She is a butterfly fairy who lives in Flutterfield with her friends and pet, Zee.
Plot
Mariposa and Her Butterfly Fairy Friends

Mariposa had always felt different. She always felt like she didn't belong. She stayed out late watching the stars and she dreamed of one day seeing the world outside Flutterfield. While attending a party for Prince Carlos, Mariposa decides to leave, running into Prince Carlos. The two soon realize they are very similar, so when Queen Marabella is poisoned, Prince Carlos seeks Mariposa's help.
Mariposa then journeys out of Flutterfield with two obnoxious fairies called Rayna and Rayla. Mariposa finds the Elios antidote using her knowledge of constellations in the sky. This transforms her wings to become more beautiful than before.
When she returns to Flutterfield, she discovers her friend Henna is responsible for the Queen's illness. Outsmarting Henna, Mariposa is able to save the Queen with the antidote, and the lights around Flutterfield light up just in time to stop the Skeezites from eating the butterfly fairies. Henna flees and Mariposa and her friends are rewarded for their bravery, and Mariposa discovers the best thing you can be is yourself and from then on, she always felt she belonged.

After the incident in defeating Henna and the Skeezites, Mariposa becomes the Royal Historian of Flutterfield. Mariposa is seen flying with Willa in the streets of Flutterfield. People around her greet her, and she greets them back. Suddenly, a fairy stops her to ask Mariposa if she could sign her daughter's book. Mariposa does, and when the mother and daughter leave, Willa asked why she never gets an autograph from Mariposa. Mariposa replies that it's 'because she never has a pen.'
Zee runs into Mariposa, crashing into her. Zee tells her that she is called by the Queen for a reason not even Zee knows. Mariposa and Willa follow Zee. When Mariposa arrives at the palace, she sees Prince Carlos and waves at him. Zee makes funny faces about Mariposa having feelings for Prince Carlos. Mariposa is irritated by her and flies faster. Mariposa and Willa bow to Queen Marabella and Prince Carlos. She becomes dreamy when Prince Carlos greets her, but it is interrupted by Lord Gastrous who Mariposa forgot to bow to and greet.
Then Queen Marabella asked Mariposa what she knows about the Crystal Fairies, to which Mariposa explains how the Kingdom of Shimmervale is powered by Crystallites. Prince Carlos tells his mother that he told her she'd be perfect for the job, but Lord Gastrous doesn't agree. He states that Mariposa didn't mention that Butterfly Fairies and Crystal Fairies have been sworn enemies for many centuries. Mariposa openly states that she disagrees, and Lord Gastrous takes that as proof that Mariposa is misinformed. Willa joins in and says to Mariposa that Crystal Fairies are "mean and cruel," and that everyone knows that. Mariposa says that it is only because it's what they're led to believe. She says that the information is in their fairytales, but the real history is different. She then begins to read from a book, which accurately depicts Crystal Fairies saying aloud that centuries ago, Butterfly Fairies and Crystal Fairies were allies. But one day, the King of the Crystal Fairies accused the Butterfly Fairies of stealing their Crystallites. The Butterfly Fairies denied it, and the Crystal Fairies did not believe them. Their anger became so intense that they declared themselves as enemies from then on. Willa then asks about how the Crystal Fairies grind the Butterfly Fairies' wings to make their bread, and Mariposa tells her that she won't find it because it never happened. Lord Gastrous still does not believe her, and tells the Queen that Mariposa is clueless. Despite that, Mariposa stands up for herself and says that anything negative that has been said about the Crystal Fairies has only been made up and proclaimed the truth is in history. Queen Marabella agreed with Mariposa and said the facts should be based on research, not fairytales. With that, the Queen appointed Mariposa as the Royal Ambassador to Shimmervale after hearing Mariposa's conclusion.
Mariposa is shocked. Willa complains, saying that the Crystal Fairies are dangerous. But Queen Marabella assures her. Mariposa asks about the Royal Library and who will look after it, to which the Queen insists that Willa will do it, and Carlos volunteers to help. Prince Carlos assures her that Mariposa will be loved by the people of Shimmervale. Mariposa doubts it and flies off.
Mariposa is reading her book in her usual spot with Zee. Suddenly, Prince Carlos arrives and asks Mariposa why she doesn't want to go to Shimmervale. Mariposa replies that she isn't the ambassador material type. Prince Carlos assures her by saying she is the smartest fairy he knows and that she read every book on Shimmervale. Still, Mariposa hesitates and worries. Prince Carlos cheers her up by saying he believes Mariposa will succeed. Yet, Mariposa is still afraid because she might do or say the wrong thing, making things worse. Prince Carlos says to her to just be herself, and he gave her a tip: "The best way to make a friend is to be a friend." Mariposa thinks about what the Prince said. Then Prince Carlos gives Mariposa a Flutter Flower to remind her of home if she has doubts. He says to take it with her because it will remind her of him. Mariposa changes her mind and agrees to go. She asks Prince Carlos to give thanks to the Queen. Prince Carlos informs her she will be greeted on the outskirts of Shimmervale.
The next day, Mariposa packs her things with Willa's help. While doing this, she gives Willa a list of assignments. Mariposa then asks Willa if she forgot anything else and Willa informs Mariposa that she hadn't packed her clothes, which Mariposa suddenly realizes. Willa takes a few clothes and puts them in the bag. They are having hard time locking Mariposa's bag because of many books Mariposa put in. After several tries and with the help of Zee, they finally manage to lock it. Mariposa bids farewell to Willa and they flew off to Shimmervale. Mariposa reads that she has to wait in the meeting spot, The Grand Welcome. But when she arrives, no one is present except Talayla. Talayla is hiding because she is scared of Mariposa. When they find her, Mariposa informs her that she won't hurt Talayla. Talayla becomes cheerful and happy. Mariposa asks Talayla where everyone is and Talayla replies that everyone was too afraid to come. They are afraid of Mariposa because she is a Butterfly Fairy. Then Talayla gives her a tour of Shimmervale.
On the tour of Shimmervale, people close their windows when they see Mariposa because they are afraid of her because she is a Butterfly Fairy. While Talayla is explaining about the castle's history, a fairy calls her and it turns out to be Catania, the Princess of Shimmervale. They talk, but it is short lived because she is ordered by her father to stay away from the window. Talayla arrives and is glad she found Mariposa because she thinks she lost them like she did other visitors. Then she shows Mariposa her room.
Mariposa is shocked to see her decorated room filled with scary plants, but Mariposa tries to sound grateful. Talayla said she decorated it herself according to what she knows about Butterfly Fairies, which mostly is based on the fairytales. Talayla then introduced Mariposa to King Regellius and Princess Catania. Mariposa remembers Catania and greets her with a "hey." This angers the King and he questions Mariposa about the way she greets the Princess of Shimmervale because it is supposed to be more formal. Mariposa rejects and begins to get confused on how to explain it, but thankfully Catania explains that it is a term of deep respect in Flutterfield to protect Mariposa. Then the King invites her to a Royal Tea. The King asks about how they defeated the Skeezites, claiming that Mariposa must have been trained to fight. Mariposa says she is not, and that they have trained warriors. The King stops asking about it after a few questions. Mariposa then sees a small Crystallite and she tries to touch it. The King stops her, warning her that it can be only touched by Crystal Fairies and Mariposa apologizes. When Mariposa gives Talayla space to pour her tea, she ends up bumping into the King. All this time, Anu, Catania's puffball, mocks Zee and causes trouble for her. Mariposa apologizes and tries to clean the mess up, but it makes everything worse. The King then asks Mariposa to sit far away from the table, and she did until she reached outside the line of the balcony. Mariposa drops the chair when she sees the King get hit by one of Anu's pranks and Zee's protection shield. The King declares the tea time is over and Talayla offers cake to Mariposa and she takes one in disappointment over the disaster she caused.
At night, Mariposa can't sleep because of the scary things in her room. Zee wakes up and can't sleep either, so Zee and Mariposa begin a pillow fight. Mariposa is awakened by Talayla's scream over her own scary decorations. Talayla then invites her to meet the residents of Shimmervale.
King Regelius and Catania accompany Mariposa to introduce herself to the people of Shimmervale. On the way there, King Regelius wants to continue the discussion they had at the Royal Tea, mentioning that the Butterfly Faires are trained in combat skills-hand to hand to fight the Skeezites. Mariposa said it never occurred to her because she got help from Rayna, Rayla, Zinzie and the mermaids. This makes the King impatient, mistaking that Mariposa does not want to reveal the secret. He then says "If you don't want to tell me, just say so." Mariposa apologizes sincerely and said she wasn't trying to be evasive, but this angered the King and he looked away from Mariposa.
Mariposa became disappointed when no one greets her. Although the King and Catania try to cheer her up, the people kept denying it. Seeing this will be useless, Mariposa goes away, but her wings accidentally hit the King's crown, and Mariposa realizes it, so she quickly tries to grab it without knowing her satchel bag got stuck on the King's arm. Therefore, the two of them fall down. The people mistake it for Mariposa attacking the King. Mariposa apologizes and gives back the crown.
On the next day, Mariposa greets Zee "good morning" and assured herself today will be better. Then suddenly, Talayla barges in and gives Mariposa her ball dress for the annual Crystal Ball. Talayla explained it is the most popular event of the year, and everyone comes to celebrate in the palace. Seeing this opportunity, Mariposa said she can win the citizens of Shimmervale and sees that both fairies can get along. She asked Talayla where the King is to thank him for the invitation.
Mariposa meets the King in the throne room and thanks him for the invitation. She asked if she can address the people of Shimmervale and send greetings from Queen Marabella. The King agreed, and Mariposa thanks him. When Zee tries to catch Anu in revenge, Mariposa tries to stops Zee, but she ends up destroying the mini-figure of the kingdom by slamming her hand into the table accidentally. This angered the King, and Mariposa tried to help clean the mess up, but her wings hit the King again. The King got angry and asked Mariposa to do something with her menacing wings. Mariposa was confused, and she tried to flip her wings down. The King is satisfied and asked Mariposa to keep it that way, and then he left. Mariposa is confused about how to keep her wings that way since the wings spring back up again. It is a problem.
Mariposa walks back to her room, and when she opens her door, she is surprised to see that her room is changed completely like her home and it is more beautiful. Mariposa finds out Catania had redecorated her room with the help of Anu. Catania then began to explain she read everything about Butterfly Fairies before Mariposa came. Catania said that she likes to read and gets lost in reading books, and Mariposa said that was true. Then Catania shows her a small library filled with books just for Mariposa. Mariposa was astonished, and Catania told Mariposa to take her favorite book: Flight of Fancy. Mariposa follows Catania to one of her favorite reading spots. Catania wants to show her the Heartstone, but Mariposa hesitates since she remembered outsiders are not allowed to touch Crystallites, and she remembered the King's warning at tea time, but Catania invites her to do this, so she flew up.
Mariposa sees the beautiful glowing Heartstone and Catania said that it's the most powerful Crystallite in Shimmervale and she feels safe when she is near it like nothing can harm her. The last sentence intrigues Mariposa. She asks Catania who would want to harm her. Catania changed the topic right away by asking if Mariposa is homesick to which Mariposa said she began to enjoy her time in Shimmervale and she says she can't wait to see GlowWater Falls again.
When Mariposa heard Catania hasn't been to GlowWaterfalls in years, she suggest to go there now and make it in time for the Crystal Ball. Catania agreed with Mariposa but she had to persuade her and she takes Mariposa to the crystal cave. Mariposa threw rainbow rocks across the pond with Catania and they had a blast. Then they both read together and after a while, Mariposa asked Catania why she doesn't go here and if it is related to why she doesn't fly with her wings. Seeing Sylvie and Catania hesitate, Mariposa said that it's fine if Catania doesn't want to tell her but Catania said she does want to tell her and she began to open up.
After Mariposa heard Catania's story about her encounter with Gwyllion and why she doesn't fly anymore, Mariposa began to understand and asked if Catania was worried that Gwyllion might come back one day. Catania answers that her father worries a lot and the real reason why he invited Mariposa to come to Shimmervale was to get advice on how to defeat Gwyllion. Mariposa is shocked, and wonders why King Regellius didn't ask Queen Marabella to which Catania admits that her father doesn't trust Butterfly Fairies that much. Mariposa asks if Catania trusts her, to which Catania said yes.
Catania then gives her a crystal necklace. Mariposa at first feels confused because according to the King, Butterfly Fairies are not supposed to take Crystallites from Shimmervale, but Catania assured her that she is not stealing it because it is a gift. Mariposa then gives her Flutter Flower to Catania in exchange for the gift. Suddenly, the Flutter Flower and the Crystallite necklace began to glow. After a moment, they remember the Crystal Ball. Mariposa hides the Crystallite part of her necklace underneath the top part of her dress so that other fairies will not see it and they will not freak out and get mad at her because none of the other fairies want her to have a Crystallite.
At the palace, Mariposa already changed her dress. Then Talayla comes in. Talayla is surprised that Mariposa is not ready yet to which Mariposa replied that she was ready and she showed her the dress. But Talayla said Mariposa is not beshimmered yet and she whistled for some small fairies to shimmerize Mariposa's dress. Mariposa thanks the little fairies and said in Flutterfield, it is called befluttering.
Mariposa arrived at the ball with her wings folded down already. Mariposa is amazed at the beautiful sight of the Crystal Ball. She then realizes she can't dance because she has to fly to do it, and she has her wings folded down, and they have to be folded down, and she cannot get down from the top of the balcony. Catania arrived and offered Mariposa to ride in her carriage. Mariposa agreed, and then she was shocked to see Catania folded her wings. They both flew down from the balcony.
Seeing Catania feeling sad and missing dancing, she suggests dancing on the floor. Mariposa asked Sylvie to take both of them down, and she started to dance on the floor. Catania, at first, is shy, afraid other people are watching, but then she agreed to dance. Eventually, they both danced, and soon other people joined too, and they had a blast. People applaud both of them, and suddenly Catania's wings sprang up and hit Mariposa. She falls to the floor. Mariposa now knows what it feels like to be accidentally hit by wings.
Then one of the guests saw Mariposa wearing a Crystallite necklace because the Crystallite part of her necklace had slipped out from underneath her dress when she fell. The guest shouted that Mariposa must have stolen the Crystallite. The ball becomes a stir when one Crystal Fairy shouts out, "Watch out for her fire breath!" King Regellius then stormed in and ordered his people to be quiet. King Regellius accused Mariposa, and he is disappointed in her after he welcomed and trusted her. Mariposa tried to explain. Catania defends Mariposa by saying, "I gave it to her!" Hearing that, King Regellius is furious with Catania and scolds her. Mariposa defends Catania. But this makes the King even angrier because he pointed out Mariposa doesn't know how to protect a kingdom and the Crystal Fairies, so they can only rely on themselves. The King ordered Mariposa to leave. Mariposa is baffled and asks if he only meant to leave the ballroom, to which King Regellius demands that she leaves Shimmervale forever. Though initially hesitant, Mariposa obeys and gives the necklace back to Catania.
On the way back to Flutterfield, Mariposa spots an old woman flying towards Shimmervale. Mariposa thought everyone was already in the castle for the ball and she suddenly assumes the old woman is Gwyllion. She winds up being right. Mariposa then goes back to Shimmervale to rescue everyone even though Zee rejects the idea a few times. She decides to go back too because she now likes Anu. Mariposa sees that Gwyllion turned all the Crystallites to stone. Mariposa then finds Catania in her favorite reading place. Both of them are the only two who haven't been frozen by Gwyllion in the ballroom. Catania explained to Mariposa that the Heartstone is like a candle that can light up the other Crystallites even if they get turned to stone, but if the Heartstone gets extinguished, it will be too late and none of the Crystallites will glow ever again. Mariposa decides to stop Gwyllion by breaking her staff but Boris found them and distracted them while his mistress was on the way to destroy the Heartstone. This makes Catania fall but Sylvie saves her. Catania flys away and Boris chases her and distracts her. Mariposa stops Boris by asking Zee and Anu to throw fruit at Boris to prevent him from bothering Catania. Boris chases Zee and Anu in revenge but he falls into Mariposa's trap. Mariposa makes Boris hits plates of fruit by surprise and traps him inside a fruit bowl by putting the fruit plate upside down with him inside.
Afterward, Mariposa gathered with Catania. Sylvie can't fly anymore to carry Catania since she broke her wing when Boris was chasing Catania. He chased her, and she accidentally hit a pole because Boris gave her nowhere else to go. It was up to Mariposa, Catania, Zee, and Anu to stop Gwyllion. However, Catania is still scared, so only Mariposa, Zee, and Anu can stop Gwyllion. Mariposa arrived and grabbed onto Gwyllion's staff immediately. However, Mariposa almost fell, so she lost her grip and dodged a few spells from Gwyllion. Mariposa began to fly in a circle to dodge Gwyllion's shots, but Boris chased her away. Gwyllion wants to continue her plan, but Zee and Anu came to Mariposa's rescue. Gwyllion shouts to Boris to distract these puffballs, which he did and he leaves Mariposa alone. Mariposa snuck up from behind and planned to take the staff without Gwyllion noticing. Unfortunately, Gwyllion saw Mariposa in the Heartstone's reflection. So Gwyllion freezes her by surprise, and this time, Mariposa cannot dodge it, and she got frozen.
Catania sees the defeated Mariposa, and she begins to worry. Then she notices she began to fly by herself and decides to stop Gwyllion by herself and help Mariposa. Catania stops Gwyllion by flying in front of her, and she tries to wrench her staff from her grip. Gwyllion plans to hit Catania with her magic since the magic ball is in front of Catania. Catania lets go, and Gwyllion begins to fall. She tries to get Boris to help her, but he cannot carry her, and instead, he falls down with her because she is dragging him down. She and Boris survive the fall, but Gwyllion's staff broke. And everyone, including Mariposa, was free from Gwyllion's spells.
But the Heartstone and the other Crystallites are still extinguished. At first, Mariposa and Catania both think it is too late to save the Heartstone and the rest of Shimmervale because the Heartstone has been extinguished and once the Heartstone has been extinguished, it cannot come back to life, and none of the other Crystallites can come back to life either. However, there is still a teeny tiny patch of the Heartstone that is glowing, and Mariposa notices Catania's pocket is glowing. Mariposa realizes that Catania's pocket is glowing from the Flutter Flower which Mariposa gave her. Catania took it out and revealed the Flutter Flower Mariposa gave glows. When Catania takes it out, the Flutter Flower makes the Crystallite on Catania's necklace glow, and it comes back to life. Mariposa thinks that if she holds the Flutter Flower close to the Heartstone, it will light up again because the other Crystallite came back to life when Catania held it up to the Flutter Flower Mariposa asks Catania to hold the Flutter Flower close to the Heartstone. At first, nothing happens, so Mariposa temporarily gives up hope, but then the Heartstone flickers, and suddenly, light comes out, and Mariposa asked Catania to hold the Flutter Flower even closer. It worked successfully, and the Heartstone began to glow brighter and brighter, and it soon came back to life. Then the other Crystallites came fully back to life. The sky brightened too, and then, Mariposa's wings and dress completely transformed. Catania's dress transformed too.
They both fly to King Regellius, and the King thanks Mariposa and apologizes to her for misjudging her. Mariposa smiles and forgives him. Mariposa notices Boris and sees Gwyllion becoming weaker. King Regellius decides to punish her, but Catania intervenes and reminds her father what its cause is. Catania offers her hand to Gwyllion. Zee became confused and asked Mariposa what Catania is doing. Mariposa replies Catania is being a friend and making one. Mariposa and the other fairies witness Gwyllion changing into a kind woman because of Catania's act of kindness.
King Regellius said he would like to repay Mariposa's kindness. Mariposa thanks him and suddenly had this idea in her mind. The next scene shows. There is a party in Flutterfield. This is Mariposa's idea to unite the two kingdoms. Mariposa is in the ball, showing what her wings could do if they were folded down to Willa, Prince Carlos, and Talayla. Willa laughs at the idea of Mariposa hitting the King's crown with her wings accidentally. Mariposa then asks Prince Carlos about the duties in the Royal Library, which they were supposed to complete. Willa answered that everything was a breeze. She said there was no trouble at all. But soon, Willa got busted because the people from the tour chased her for a refund. After all, Willa had given a poor tour, and Willa flew away.
Mariposa is alone with Prince Carlos after Catania and Talayla leave them alone. Prince Carlos comments on how impressed he is with Mariposa. She replies that she couldn't have done it without the Flutter Flower Prince Carlos gave her. A song came out, and he asks Mariposa to dance, and Mariposa accepts. The film ends with Mariposa dancing happily with Prince Carlos. She has established a new friendship with Catania, and all the people enjoyed their time. Even Zee and Anu enjoyed it, and Zee kisses Anu as a sign of liking.
Personality
Mariposa is a brave, smart, calm, daring, kind-hearted, humble, and shy butterfly fairy with a taste for adventure. Mariposa never felt accepted and always thought she was different. At first, Mariposa was very reticent, but after saving Flutterfield, she became more confident than before. She loves to read books more than anything else.
Physical Appearance
Mariposa is a young butterfly fairy. She has platinum blonde long hair with pink highlights, brown eyes, and light skin. In the sequel, she has strawberry blonde hair without the pink highlights. Her signature color is pink because her wings and dress are pink.

Casual Wear
She wears a pink outfit with colorful butterflies on the top and a flower hair band. Her hairstyle is like Elina's because it is tucked into a bun behind her neck. Her natural wings are pink and white.
Ceremony Look
When the Fairy Speck grants her new wings, they become bigger and darker in color with sparkles. Her dress is the same in the ceremony except that she wears a dark pink part over the skirt part. She wears her hair in a loose ponytail with a bigger flower hairband.
Mariposa & the Fairy Princess
Casual Wear
She wears the same dress as the first movie, except the straps are slightly thinner, and the skirt can naturally move with the wind. Her large wings are the same as at the end of the first movie but not as sparkly as before.
Gala Wear
She wears a sparkly pink, purple, and orange shoulder dress with pink shoes. Her wings are sparkly as well.
Gala Look
The top was the same as her second outfit, but it's more sparkly, and she made a sparkly long pink skirt by folding her butterfly wings.
Transformation Wear
She wears a top that is orange on the right breast and has pink butterfly wings on the left breast. The lower part of the dress is pink. She wears her hair in a high ponytail with braids at the temples. Her wings are bigger, and they are pink and orange.

- She is the only Barbie character to have brown eyes.

- She was the first protagonist to not be voiced by Kelly Sheridan or Diana Kaarina. However, she was voiced by Kelly Sheridan in the sequel.

- In the first Mariposa film, it is said by Elina that Mariposa is a good friend of hers, meaning that Elina was played by Barbie. But in the sequel, Catania is not played by Barbie, meaning Mariposa is. So it could be a mistake or the writers decided for some reason to change roles meaning that Elina and Mariposa both were played by Barbie.
